How to sync your runs across Garmin, Apple Watch and Strava

Syncing runs across Garmin, Apple Watch and Strava requires connecting each device to Strava as your central hub, then enabling automatic uploads from your watch or running app. Once linked, your workouts flow between platforms automatically, giving you one complete training log without manual transfers.
Why sync your running devices and apps?
Using multiple running devices and platforms fragments your training data. Syncing creates a single source of truth for your runs, eliminating duplicate efforts, conflicting metrics and the confusion of checking three different apps to review the week. A unified log also makes it easier to spot patterns in your training and recovery.
Connect Garmin to Strava
- Open Strava on your phone and tap your profile icon (bottom right)
- Select Settings, then select Apps & Devices
- Tap Connect under Garmin
- You'll be taken to Garmin's website; sign in with your Garmin account
- Authorise Strava to access your Garmin data
- Return to Strava and confirm the connection is active
Once connected, new runs from your Garmin device automatically sync to Strava within minutes of finishing. This works with Forerunner, Epix, Fenix and Venu series watches. Older models may not support this direct connection; check Garmin's compatibility list.
Connect Apple Watch to Strava
Apple Watch runs upload via the native Apple Health app and Strava's integration with it. You don't need to authorize anything separately—Strava reads from Apple Health automatically if you've granted permission during initial setup.
- Ensure Apple Health is installed on your iPhone
- Open the Fitness app on your Apple Watch and start a run
- After your run, the workout syncs to Apple Health automatically
- Strava checks Apple Health regularly and pulls in completed workouts
- Runs appear in Strava within 5–15 minutes
If runs aren't appearing, check that Strava has permission to access Health data. Go to iPhone Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Strava, and enable all required permissions.
Set up automatic uploads from Strava
Once your watch or device connects to Strava, enable automatic upload settings so you don't manually push data each time. This step is essential for a truly seamless workflow.
- In Strava, go to Settings > Apps & Devices
- Find your connected device (Garmin or Apple Watch)
- Toggle on Auto-Upload or similar (wording varies by device)
- Confirm your preferred privacy zone and activity visibility settings
Handle Strava-exclusive features and third-party apps
Some runners use additional apps like Runkeeper or Komoot alongside their primary device. These can also connect to Strava, but prioritise one main source to avoid duplicate uploads. If you use multiple apps, disable auto-upload on secondary ones and upload manually only for activities your primary device didn't capture.
Unified training data and adaptive coaching
Once synced, your complete training log becomes the foundation for smarter coaching. Apps like RunV use aggregated run data—pace, heart rate, recovery time, distance trends—to tailor weekly plans, flag overtraining risk and recommend appropriate effort levels. The more accurate and unified your data, the more precise the guidance becomes. Sync isn't just about convenience; it's how modern coaching learns your patterns and adapts in real time.
Troubleshoot missing or delayed syncs
- Check internet connection on both your phone and watch
- Restart the Strava app and your phone
- Verify you've authorised Strava to access device/health data
- Confirm your Garmin or Apple credentials are still valid in Strava settings
- Wait 15–20 minutes; delayed syncs are usually temporary
- Log out of Strava and log back in if syncing stalls for hours
FAQ
- Will syncing to Strava create duplicate runs on my watch?
- No. Syncing pushes data from your watch to Strava; it doesn't create a second run on your device. You'll see one activity per run across all platforms.
- Can I sync runs from multiple watches to the same Strava account?
- Yes. You can connect Garmin, Apple Watch and other devices to one Strava account. Each device syncs independently, and Strava consolidates everything into your training log.
- What happens if I disconnect a device from Strava?
- Past runs remain in Strava and won't be deleted. New runs from that device won't sync unless you reconnect it. This is useful if you switch devices or need to troubleshoot a connection.
