How to get a training plan onto your Garmin watch

You can load a training plan onto your Garmin watch through Garmin Connect, third-party coaching apps, or by manually entering workouts. The method depends on your watch model and where your plan comes from.
Use Garmin Connect to sync plans
Garmin Connect is the official app that connects most Garmin watches to your smartphone or computer. If your plan is created in Garmin Connect or imported there, you can push it directly to your watch.
- Open Garmin Connect on your phone or visit connect.garmin.com on a browser
- Log in with your Garmin account
- Go to Training > Training Plans or Coaching
- Select or create your plan
- Press Send to Device and choose your watch
- Sync your watch via Bluetooth
Import plans from third-party coaching apps
Many running apps—including coach-led platforms—integrate with Garmin Connect. You can export your plan from a coaching app and import it into Garmin Connect, which then syncs to your watch.
- Export your plan as a .fit or .tcx file from your coaching app
- Log into Garmin Connect
- Select Upload or Import
- Choose the file and confirm
- Sync your watch to receive the plan
Manually create or edit workouts on your watch
If you have a compatible Garmin watch, you can build workouts directly on the device. This is useful for quick adjustments or if you prefer not to use the app ecosystem.
Navigate to Training > Workouts on your watch, select Create Workout, and build intervals, rest periods, and distances. The watch will guide you through each session.
Check your Garmin watch model supports training plans
Not all Garmin sports watches have the same features. Newer models (Forerunner 255, Epix, Fenix range) have full plan support. Older or entry-level watches may only support basic workouts.
- Forerunner 255, 945, 965: full plan support
- Epix and Fenix series: full plan support
- Older Forerunner (35, 45): limited or no plan sync
- Check your manual or Garmin's support site for your exact model
Sync your watch after loading a plan
After you've added a plan via Garmin Connect or manually, your watch needs to sync to receive the data. Open the Garmin Connect app on your phone and ensure Bluetooth is on, then press the sync button. Your watch will pull the latest plan.
Why structured plans matter for your training
Getting a training plan onto your watch turns it from a tracker into a coaching tool. Structured workouts keep you accountable and help you progress systematically. The best plans adapt to your feedback—how you felt, your pace, your recovery—rather than staying rigid. This is where data-driven coaching shines: your watch collects the metrics, but a good coaching app or coach interprets them and adjusts your next session. RunV-style coaching uses your recent efforts and heart-rate data to refine future workouts, so syncing a plan is just the first step in a feedback loop that actually gets you faster.
FAQ
- Can I use a Strava or TrainingPeaks plan on my Garmin watch?
- TrainingPeaks integrates with Garmin Connect, so you can send plans from TrainingPeaks to your watch. Strava workouts are harder to sync directly; you may need to export them as .tcx files and import them into Garmin Connect.
- What file formats does Garmin accept?
- Garmin watches accept .fit and .tcx file formats. Most running apps allow you to export plans in one of these formats, which you can then import into Garmin Connect.
- Do I need an internet connection to run a plan on my watch?
- No. Once a plan is synced to your watch via Garmin Connect, you can run it offline. Your watch will still record and display metrics during the workout.
